In addition, it becomes an asset that will certainly increase the desirability and value of your home. Quick guide to decking, patios and pergolasCreating a deck, patio or pergola is a great way to make the most of your garden and extend your living space during the summer months. Getting the most out of your outdoor space requires careful planning and, although it is possible to do yourself, it’s often a good idea to get expert advice and help if your project is complex. Our guide to decking, patios and pergolas will help you make the right decisions and ask the right questions. Is my garden suitable? It’s important to consider the amount of space available, the terrain you will be working with and factors such as the proximity to your property and the properties of your neighbours. Decking usually works well on rough or sloping terrain as it can even out the surface without major excavation, whereas patios may be more suitable if the ground on which you are building is less stable. You should also consider how large the deck or patio will be in proportion to the rest of the garden and whether it will create the right balance for your lifestyle. How will I use the space?Decking can provide space for a range of activities – from simply sitting outdoors, to dining, gardening, sports, barbequing or a hot tub, but in order to make sure you get the right structure, you’ll need to consider the usage in advance. The weight and space requirements of these activities may require specialist materials to be used. Your builder will be able to advise you on the best materials for the job. What materials should I use? There are a range of materials available for decking and patios, although pergolas tend to be made from either wood or metal.Wood decking is generally low cost and if you buy a product that is properly treated it can provide good resistance from rot.Wood does shrink and swell with the weather conditions, so making sure you get an expert to fit the decking and advise on the maintenance required will help you get the most out of this material. The type of wood you choose for your decking is also important. There are two main types of wood to choose from – hardwood and softwood. Both are equally suitable for decking provided they are properly treated.
Properly treated, both wood types are equally durable and a properly constructed and maintained hard or soft wood deck can last more than 25 years.Vinyl or composite decking is an alternative to wood that may require less maintenance but can be more expensive. Wood is the most attractive and commonly used materials for pergolas. Paving stones are a good option for patios and are low maintenance. They are available in a wide range of styles to suit any property but may be more expensive than wood decking and you need to make sure adequate foundations and drainage are in place. It is important to make sure there is a reinforced foundation base on which to lay paving stones as this will prevent any movement and cracks in your paving, and will also help prevent weeds from growing through any gaps. A good builder will be able to advise on the best option for you. Concrete has a reputation for being dull and grey, but there are now many varieties in a range of colours and styles. This is another low-maintenance option that can be quick to put in place, but again, it’s important to make sure the site is suitable and adequate drainage is in place. What maintenance will be required? It’s really important to consider the level of maintenance that may be required to keep your decking clean and sound, and how long it’s likely to last. Some materials may require specialist cleaning or regular treatment; whilst others may be require minimal maintenance. Think about the amount of time and effort you are prepared to put in to the maintenance of your deck or patio. Concrete patios can be lower maintenance than decking, although decking may be a more affordable option. What is my budget?Setting a budget may help you decide on the materials you wish to use, although it’s important to factor in the potential for ongoing maintenance costs and the lifetime of the decking or patio you are buying as it may be worth investing more in the short term to save money later.
