How do I check for and prevent leaks?There a a number of things you can do to prevent leaks. Firstly, it’s important to keep your building well maintained (especially your roof and external areas that are exposed to the elements), and to check it regularly. Look our for signs of leakage such as water marks on ceilings, moisture pooling, or low water pressure. How can I prevent burst pipes?To prevent your pipes from freezing in the winter months, insulate them well. You can do this yourself, or A&D Properties can do this for you. You should also insulate your water tank – you should only insulate the top and sides if your tank is in the attic, as it will be wamed by the heat rising from the room below. What happens if my pipes freeze or I notice a leak?The most important thing to do is turn off your water supply as quickly as possible. It helps to know where your stopcock is located in advance – this will normally be near your other utilities and close to the point where they enter your property. In an emergency, and if you can’t locate the stopcock in your home you can fund the main stop cock outside the property (this usually has a small square or circular cover with ‘water’ or ‘WC’ on it). Be careful though – as if you live in a flat or converted property you may be switching off everyone’s supply! Your next step is to call in a plumber.
